Publisher's summary

There’s only one thing standing in the way of your ideal career: You.

This book is for you if you want to do meaningful work that pays well. If you want to make a big career change without going back to school or taking a step down. If you’ve often wondered if there could be more out there for you. Spoiler alert: There is!

Career coach, podcast host, and CEO Scott Anthony Barlow shows you that it really is possible to find your way to a career that feeds you and fulfills you; one in which you get to use the talents, strengths and skills you already possess to get just as much back out of it as you put in.

Drawing from his years of studying Happy High Achievers—high performers who are fulfilled in their careers—Barlow delivers a series of real-life case studies and insights to help you join their ranks. You’ll learn how a lawyer who’d spent a decade trying to remove himself from law successfully transitioned to content strategy. How an engineer made a career change upwards instead of laterally while moving cities, jobs and industries. And many more.

Along the way, you’ll learn about the Four Major Milestones that all happy high achievers cross, and the Five Obstacles to Change that each needs to overcome. You’ll see that it is possible to have a career you’re enamored with—one that is good for you, your family, your bank account, and even your long-term health. And not only is this possible. It’s critical. Because the world of work is undergoing a transformation. And it’s led by people like you.

Phenomenal book!!

This is one of the best books I've ever read about career transition BY FAR!! It's not only encouraging, it also provides tactical information and steps to secure your dream job. One of my favorite lines from the book is, "...Some people say, 'I would take less money if I had more flexibility.' This seems like a reasonable statement. Let's evaluate it, though. What goes into that seemingly innocent statement? First why do you believe you would have to take less money? Second, when you make that kind of statement, you are assuming there must be a trade off: you can only have this if you let go of that. But being a paid a premium to tolerate a lack of what you really need (flexibility) isn't thriving. It is settling..."

Looking for a place to start? This is it!

Scott makes the pages come alive with his humor and casual conversational style. I was so engaged, it actually felt like he was in the room with me.

One of my favorite things about this book is that he brings on real clients to tell their stories. You can't help but connect with every single one of them. So many times I found myself thinking "Ugh.. I can relate." But he doesn't leave you hanging there! Scott breaks down each concept in the most understandable ways and brings clarity to how you can approach some of the biggest challenges we face.

This book is not all rainbows and sunshine though. There are so many inspiring moments and stories weaved throughout, But it's also honest and real about what it means to change your life (which is, not surprisingly, not all rainbows and sunshine either). If you're looking for some perspective or a place to start amidst all the noise, start here!

Be The Active Participant in Your Career

Scott has a gift for explaining how to do really challenging things in easy to understand terms. His book (and if you have ever talked to him, most conversations with him) has a winning formula for how to actively seek out and create a career that you love. Most people skip over taking the time to envision what it is they want most from work because they don't believe that it is possible for them. Scott shows, through various examples of former clients, that doing this work upfront saves a ton of time and actually allows people to make their vision a reality.
