Success Stories

My favorite part of the career change boot camp was actually having some of those conversations and getting feedback and positive feedback about strengths. And to me that was key, because in that moment, I realized that my network not only is a great for finding the next role, it also is helpful to… they help you remind you who you are and who you will be in your next role, even if the current circumstances are not ideal.

[00:00:00] Scott Anthony Barlow: Over 1,000 employers representing 14 million workers found that 44% of workers' core skills will fundamentally change within the next five years.

[00:00:10] Pretty crazy, right? Okay. This means that someone inside those companies is actually guiding teams through new workflows, new structures, new technology, new uncertainty. That is adaptive leadership. The ability to guide other people through change that they did not choose and cannot fully control.

[00:00:28] The pattern I see consistently in our highest-achieving clients, well, they take real ownership. They are open to doing things differently. They lean into their strengths. They stay curious even when things are uncomfortable, and they do not wait for conditions to be perfect before they move.

[00:00:46] All of our client-facing team members, including our coaches, say the same thing. The clients who are set up to succeed are the ones who understand that growth requires discomfort, who are willing to try things they're afraid of, and who have the self-awareness to know that waiting is itself a decision.

[00:01:04] Again, this is another area where I see two groups forming. People building the ability to lead others through the unknown, and people waiting for things to settle out first. The first group, well, they get so much more valuable over time. The second falls further behind, which I think is a tragedy.

[00:01:22] Introduction: This is Happen To Your Career. Most people let their career happen to them, falling into jobs by accident, staying longer than they should, and wondering if this is really all there is. But a few people decide to stop settling and do something different. This podcast is for you, to take control, get intentional, and design your work to fit the life that you want to build. Real stories and real research so that you can stop waiting and start making it happen. I'm Scott Anthony Barlow.

[00:01:48] Scott Anthony Barlow: One of our clients was a real estate agent. What became clear as we worked together is that his most transferable skill was not industry knowledge like he thought. It was the ability to guide people through one of the biggest and most uncertain decisions of their lives to be the steady person in the room when all the people that he was supporting were not.

[00:02:08] This allowed him to adapt when markets shifted and help people adapt right alongside him. This, by the way, does not live in a job title. It lives in him. I wanna make the distinction I come back to constantly. I do not actually think it is about finding work you love. I know that's something that gets said a lot on the internet. I think it's actually about finding work that fits who you are.

[00:02:32] Those two things might sound similar or the same. They are not. Work you love is about how something feels. Work that is who you are is about your identity; it's about the things that you can't stop doing, the way you naturally think, what you bring to a problem that no one else necessarily taught you, but what has evolved over time, both nature and nurture.

[00:02:57] At HTYC, at its simplest form, we call this signature strengths. The truest representation of you, the combination of your innate talents and how they have developed through your environment and experiences, the foundational pieces of how you operate.

[00:03:14] When your work lines up more frequently with those things, you start to notice a difference. The more aligned you are with your work, the higher your ability to earn because you're able to add more value more naturally. It feels more organic. Alignment is not just a feeling. It changes what you're capable of. It changes what you're contributing.

[00:03:35] LinkedIn and PwC's data makes this concrete. Workers with current relevant skills earn 56% more than peers without, and that gap doubled in just one year. Pretty crazy, right? Credentials are declining; character and demonstrated capability are rising.

[00:03:54] Adaptability, stress tolerance, self-control under pressure. Those are technically skills you can develop. But they're not what people think of when they think of job skills. Those are much more associated with character traits. And of course those can be developed over time, and that is exactly the point.

[00:04:14] Let me give you an example. One of our clients was a principal scientist; accomplished, credentialed, respected, and she felt completely useless. Not because the work was too hard, but because it did not utilize her. The repetitive corporate work had nothing to do with who she actually was or how she wanted to contribute. Or even what she wanted to contribute.

[00:04:38] When she started getting clear on her actual strengths and what she genuinely valued and wanted to build, everything shifted. That clarity alone changed how she saw her options and what was gonna be great for her. Now, I want you to look at your last five years for just a moment here.

[00:04:57] Where were you the most energized and most effective at the same time? I just want you to think about a couple of moments. Not the biggest title, not the highest profile project, the moments where the work felt like it, in small ways even or large ways, that it was built for you. There are some clues there. I guarantee it. And where your strengths actually live.

[00:05:19] Okay, so let's pull this all together. Here's what I want you to notice about everything we just walked through. Adaptive leadership, work that is who you are. They are consistently the things people find most meaningful in their work. Not a coincidence.

[00:05:34] The person with real judgment, real relationships, real clarity about who they are does not become less valuable; they become more valuable. Because the gap between them and someone without these things gets wider, not narrower.

[00:05:47] Another client who came on the podcast to share their story said it this way, and it stuck with me. "I was so comfortable in that career, and I kind of felt like I had job security until I didn't."

[00:05:58] That's the version of safety most people are playing for. Comfortable. Comfortable. Comfortable. And suddenly not. It almost never works forever. The worst piece of career advice I've ever heard is stay in your lane. And why would you put yourself through a stressful change? And the second worst, which almost everyone is still giving, is just apply to more jobs and eventually something works out.

[00:06:19] What actually works and what has always worked is building real relationships, understanding your strengths, and position yourself with real intention. And it's what we help people build at Happen To Your Career.

[00:06:30] By the way, if you want additional help, we have a really wonderful resource in the form of our Career Change Guide. You can actually go to our website, we'll put the link in the description and you can download your copy of the guide just by going in, clicking the link below. It's all in the show notes and description.

[00:06:47] Because here's the truth, the moment you take that first action, you stop letting your career happen to you and start happening to it. I'm Scott Anthony Barlow. This is Happen To Your Career. Let's go make this happen. Adios.
