Bio

It was the summer of 2013, and I was driving up to our yurt in the woods. This was a much needed break and a time to figure out why I was so tired and frustrated in my career. We had no internet or cell service, so I was downloading books to my e-reader, and came across Finding Your Own North Star by Martha Beck.

This book changed everything. I realized I had created a career that I thought I should have vs. a career I truly loved. I had chosen a career path that looked great on paper, but inside was sucking the life out of me.

I also realized I had spent 20 years trying to find fulfillment and fix my career externally. I had tried on position after position – hoping one would fit – whether it was one of my many marketing positions, becoming a recruiter, switching industries completely to manage a university training program, or launching my own consulting business.

After reading the book, I realized I hadn’t taken the time to really do some important internal work. I didn’t really know who I was and what I wanted at a deep level. I knew that had to be my next step. So when I learned that the author, Martha Beck, ran a coach training program, I immediately signed up.

I learned so much about myself, how to make better decisions, and how to carve out a life and work that matched who I really am. Now five coaching and personality psychology certifications later, I am finally doing what I love in a way I love: Helping passionate professionals connect who they are to work they love (whether that’s a career, business, or something else!)

What I know now for sure is that when you connect who you are to your career, you feel passionate, inspired, motivated and are more likely to wake up curious about the day ahead, come home feeling fulfilled, and have energy and focus for the other important areas of your life.

On the other hand, when you design your career based on what you think other people want, financial success alone, or how you think you “should” work, every day can seem like a meaningless struggle – you wake up tired and dreading the day ahead, and come home tired, which impacts everything else.

I wish I knew then what I know now – so I wouldn’t have wasted one more day in a job that felt draining and meaningless. But now I know doing work that feels energizing and fulfilling is possible, and that’s what I want for you too!

Today, I’m thrilled to be a part of the Happen To Your Career team and have the opportunity to combine all of my experience and expertise in marketing, recruiting, career development, interviewing and resume writing to help frustrated professionals make those small but important tweaks to find or create work they love – and provide the tools and insight to go out and get that ideal job (or build that right business).

Outside of coaching, you can find me hanging out with my horse, Tater, exploring the trails with hubby and dog Cosmo, getting back to nature at our yurt, or listening to great music and laughing with good friends.

FAVORITE BOOKs

Finding Your Own North Star by Martha Beck – This is the book that started me on my journey to becoming a coach – although I didn’t know it at the time. It taught me valuable lessons about the differences between my true self and social self, and how that impacts your career choices.

Personality Hacker: Harness the Power of Your Personality Type to Transform Your Work, Relationships, and Life by Joel Mark Witt and Antonia Dodge – This book (and their podcast) opened me up to what the MBTI was always meant to be – the code to really understanding your cognitive functions (the work of Carl Jung) and how to use them for your own personal development. It’s deep work but life changing!

Magic Diamond – Dario Nardi – Dr. Dario Nardi is a neuroscientist who studies the brain and maps brain scans to personality styles (yes – I have had mine scanned!). His work goes deep into personality style nuances and sub types. If you’re a personality psychology nerd, this one is for you.

Sparked – Jonathan Field – After years of studying happiness through his books and podcast, The Good Life Project, Jonathan Field created a new way of looking at how we are sparked when it comes to our work. I loved this book so much I took his training and became a Certified Sparketype Advisor.

Deep Work – Cal Newport – This book taught me that it’s not just about the type of work you do, but how you do that work that makes a difference – from your ideal time of day for creative focus, to your right work environment.

FUN FACT

I lived in a yurt in the woods for a year when we couldn’t find a house to buy in our new city (including -30 degree winter weather). I love horses, did endurance riding for years (25-50 mile rides) and am now learning how to sort cows.
