Your Job Search in the Social Media Age with Al Smith

ABOUT AL SMITH

If you’re looking to give your job hunt a shot in the arm and vastly improve your chances of being found by the right people, you’re in the right place.

Al Smith spent 35 years working in management, sales, marketing, and training for such companies as Xerox, Kimberly-Clark, and Systema. Now he’s the Director of the Unity North Atlanta Career Ministry in Marietta, GA.  The ministry focuses on helping all people, regardless of their faith to “reclaim their position in the workplace.” His new book with co-author Jeff Sheehan is called HIRED! Paths to Employment in the Social Media Era and is available now!

Al spent two “miserable years” in career transition.  He found that the strategies he’d always relied on no longer worked.  Improving his resumé alone wasn’t enough.  Scouring the job boards wasn’t helping.  Even networking wasn’t giving him the results he needed.

He started to dig deeper into the recruiting process, trying to understand exactly how hiring managers and HR personnel were using resources like Linkedin to find candidates.  He then learned how to leverage his findings into crafting and building his online presence to ensure that he would be found in searches.

Al recommends using the Advanced Search function on Linkedin to search titles and job descriptions and to find valuable and relevant keywords to use in your own profile:

Find the Advanced search function next to the main search window at the top of the page.

Once inside the Advanced search, you can widen or narrow your searches by adding or removing parameters and keywords.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
  • What a Boolean search is and why it matters in your job search.
  • 5 actionable steps you can take TODAY to boost your visibility on Linkedin.
  • What you can do offline to greatly improve your chances of getting noticed by your potential employer of choice.

Finding the Time

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Feeling overwhelmed? Do you feel like there’s just never enough time to get to everything you want or need to do? Is a lack of time holding you back?

Well, we’re breaking down some of the most common myths around lack of time! We’ve also got some practical solutions that will help you reclaim some of your precious hours!

We know there are only 24 hours in the day.  So how is it that some people seem to be able to do SO MUCH more?

The key is really to view time as a resource, just like money.  In fact, the saying “time is money” is very much a reality.  Take an honest look, a complete inventory of how you are currently spending your time and start to evaluate.  Decide what is truly valuable to you and what isn’t.   Then, armed with this information, you can make decisions about how you want to spend your time based on what really matters to you.

When you’re doing the things that you actually WANT to be doing, the things that add value to your life and make you happy, a crazy thing happens.  YOU start to bring more value into the lives of others!

Scott’s Schedule
Our Challenge to You:

Pick one of the strategies mentioned in the show and let us know how it works for you!  What are you going to do differently with your time now?  Let us know here in the comments or drop Scott an email at Scott@happentoyourcareer.com!

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
  • Why it’s not a genuine lack of time, but your perception of a lack of time that causes overwhelm.
  • Three strategies for reclaiming your time
    • Cutting out things that are non-value added
    • Scheduling
    • Outsourcing
  • How to identify what really matters to you (and where you WANT to spend your time).

Fear Means “Go!” with Greg Faxon

ABOUT GREG FAXON

Before becoming a personal coach, Greg Faxon worked with Fortune 500 companies on refining their market research and strategy. Now he helps “high-performing” and “high-potential” entrepreneurs to live deliberately and grow businesses that make an impact.
Greg gives us some powerful insights on fear, specifically on how it can be an indication that you are on the right path. He believes our fear can be used to push ourselves past where we currently are and toward living a life “on purpose.”

The key is to accept that fear is part of the deal, that just like the weightlifter who understands that discomfort comes with the territory when building muscle, embracing our fear will make us uncomfortable, but will also make us stronger.

When you continue to do the things that were scary, you start to build this great emotional hit from it and it becomes a habit very easily because you’re like “Wow, I feel phenomenal – like that scared the crap out of me, and I still found a way to do it?” That feels great.

Greg Faxon
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
  • Why fear isn’t always a bad thing.  In fact, it might even be evidence that you are on the right path!  You’ll learn why fear is something to “blend with”, rather than to run from or to try and crush.
  • How building the “bravery habit”, doing things that scare you often, can catapult you to success (and can even become addictive!).
  • Why most people have trouble “letting go” and trusting in their decisions.
  • The distinction between “choice” and “practice” in living your life.
  • That you most likely already know what you want to do with your life and how the process of “uncovering” vs. “discovering” will lead you to it.

Authenticity: Your Path to Success with Greg Giangrande

ABOUT GREG GIANGRANDE

Greg Giangrande has been called “one of the most highly-regarded executives in his field” by Adweek. As Executive VP and Chief Human Resources Officer for Time Inc. he oversees HR globally for 8,000 employees. He’s held executive level HR positions at News Corporation, The Hearst Corporation and HR leadership positions at Conde Nast and Random House.  Greg also writes a weekly advice column called “Go to Greg” for the NY Post and makes appearances on Good Day NY.

He’s also called all of the shots in his career, accepting only the opportunities that were aligned with what he calls his “True North.”

I never wanted to look back and regret not having spent enough time, or shortchanging my kids in that role. I could deal with regretting not having spent enough time in my professional career. But I don’t think I could deal with looking back and not having spent enough time raising my children.

Greg Giangrande

Greg’s anchor, his “True North” has always been his dedication to his family and keeping his career in balance with that has guided his decisions.

Greg believes that most people tend to overcomplicate their career decisions.  What it comes down to is holding tight to what matters to you, then focusing on providing as much value as you can, learning where you can excel and then doubling down on that!

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
  • The importance of defining your “compass points” and your “True North” – finding direction in your career is simpler than you think!
  • How to make yourself indispensable and attract more opportunity at work.  *Hint:  it’s all about providing value
  • How to differentiate yourself from your peers.
  • The difference between “activity” and “productivity” and how knowing that difference can help you skyrocket your career to the next level.
  • What your “Reputation Index” is and how to manage it!

It’s Now or Never with Doc Kennedy

ABOUT DOC KENNEDY

Fear of failure cripples. It keeps you from taking action on the things you know can lead you to realizing your dreams and living up to your potential. Doc Kennedy let the fear paralyze him for a long time. But, after a volunteer position gave him the skills and the confidence he needed and his dream of becoming a filmmaker started to look like a reality, he decided to go all in!  He transitioned into filmmaking full-time.

Starting out as a freelancer with little work lined up, Doc soon started to experience the more stressful side of being self-employed, living off of his “side fund” while building his business. He knew though, that if he hadn’t made the leap when he did, he wouldn’t have done it at all.

The timing wasn’t going to get any better than it was.

Doc Kennedy

Doc is now hitting his stride, after many lessons learned in his first year as an entrepreneur.  He freely acknowledges the huge role his mentors played in his new career and has set up Filmmaker’s Focus now as a way to help the next wave of aspiring filmmakers!

There’s a lot to be said for just getting started.  This is what differentiates the successful from those who just look on from the sidelines.  The time will NEVER be just right.  Get into motion and you’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish!

I’m nowhere close to where I envisioned myself, but thank God I’m not where I was.

Plant Your Flag, Live Your Purpose with Matt Shoup

ABOUT MATT SHOUP

Positive. Passionate. Powerful. Purpose. Identify your “flag” then go Plant it! Everyone has their own unique gift, talent, and benefit that they bring to the world. Wrap your mind, your heart, your soul, everything about you around that, then build on it!

Highly successful serial entrepreneur, speaker, coach, and Jiu Jitsu purple belt Matt Shoup is back for the THIRD time on the show. His latest book, Plant Your Flag: The Warrior’s Battle Guide to Life, Love, and Leadership is due out in early July.

There are four ways to live your life:

1.  You can be a “No show”, moving through life unaware of your potential and the impact you may have had on the world.

2.  You can be a Spectator, watching everything from the sidelines, but never putting any “skin in the game.”

3.  You can be a Fighter.  Now you’re all in.  Taking stands and fighting. If you are in the fighting space and you find yourself wrung out, burned out…you are in the wrong fight.  You are not in the Warrior space yet.

4.  You can be a Warrior.  This is where you show up, you stand up for what you believe in, and you shield up.  You’ve chosen the fight that is tied to your deepest core values, principles you would die for.  You are living your purpose.

The Warrior stage is not a “happy ending”.  The real fight has just begun.  Now you are in the fight that really matters.  The bigger the stand, the bigger the fight.

The Warrior space is a scary, loud, yet peaceful space.

Matt Shoup

In working to identify your “flag”, make the decision to be present.  Show up.  You have to get out of the seats and off the bench, you need to show up, then decide to engage.  Start punching, start swinging. Go stand for something and see what it’s like.  Always be pushing to get to that next space.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
  • The importance of identifying your core values, unique skills, and talents in finding your “flag” (your greatest purpose in life).
  • The four ways to live life and how to move toward greatness in the Warrior space.
  • How your “recipe” is the key to your results.
  • Why your purpose is NOT your vocation.  You should be living your purpose in EVERY area of your life.

Career Q & A!

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

We’re trying something new!  Today we answer some of the most common questions we get from HTYC’ers!

Stuck in a job with no idea of what else you would or could do?

Or maybe you have some idea, but aren’t sure how to get started towards a new career?

Having trouble deciding between two different career paths?

Struggling with motivation?  Comparing yourself to others?

Feeling trapped because of debt?

Well, you’re definitely NOT alone.

Because we get these questions so often, we wanted to make sure that our answers reached as many people as possible.

Note:  This episode is heavily action-oriented.  So, if you’re ready to jump in and start moving today grab a pen!  Go through the Past Jobs Exercise with us to see how your past experiences can help guide you to your future!

The funny thing is with careers, you don’t even have to know what the exactly what the job title is, or the business title is or that thing you’re going to sell is…you just have to know enough of what you want or what’s important to you so that you can look for those opportunities and take advantage of those opportunities instead of pass them by when you see them throughout the rest of your life”

Scott Barlow
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
  • How figuring out what you value, what you enjoy, and what you can be truly great at is the path to finding work you’ll love.  It’s not about attaining the perfect job first, THEN being happy.
  • How getting clear on what you want then taking action will open up more options and more opportunities than you can imagine!
  • How your past job experiences leave clues that can help you find your dream career!  Pay attention!
  • Why, when you take control of your career and make decisions that are right for you, anything is possible.  Job titles and particular fields don’t necessarily dictate your salary or number of opportunities for employment.
  • The powerful hold that debt can have on you and why you should avoid it at all costs.
  • How looking at other people’s careers shouldn’t stop you or discourage you!  Quite the contrary!  Everyone started somewhere.  It took Anthony Bourdain almost 20 years between the time he graduated from cooking school and when he finally found notoriety.
  • The importance of getting out of your comfort zone!  Trying new things is where the growth happens!

Dating Advice (applied to your career) with Jeff Goins

ABOUT JEFF GOINS

Alright.  So, what does dating have to do with careers anyway?

As it turns out, a LOT actually. Jeff Goins, author of the new book The Art of Work, talks with us about power of commitment in finding, following , and succeeding in your “calling”, that thing you were born to do!

Jeff Goins has written four books to date.  His latest, The Art of Work, draws from his own personal experiences in creating his career as a writer, as well as case studies and additional research to take the reader through a proven process for discovering the work they were meant for.  He shows us that our “calling”, whether we believe it or not, is as much about the rest of the world as it is about us.

No one succeeds in a vacuum.  It takes the support and guidance of others along the way.

We do not get to where we’re going in life on our own. We need mentors and guides and supporters to get us there.

Jeff Goins

What’s more, tackling life’s challenges with a “go big or go home” attitude isn’t always the best approach.  Often times, it will be the more gradual, intentional, and committed approach to these questions that leads us to our greatest successes and deepest longterm fulfillment.

Finding our true purpose, that “thing that endures” through the highs and the lows, the thing that leads us to making our mark on the world, only comes to us when we enlist the support of others and allow them to contribute to us and then stick around long enough to see what our dream can become!

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
  • The “dating vs. marriage” career analogy:  How by spending your life jumping from dream to dream (“date to date”), and never fully committing to any one dream, you will not see the reward, that “thing that endures”, the impact you might have had on the world.   Your level of commitment in whatever you choose to do directly correlates to the results you see.
  • The importance of having a strong network of supporters and mentors.
  • Why “building a bridge” vs. “taking the leap” from where you are to where you want to go, taking the gradual, “unsexy” approach might just be the best way to make a successful career transition.
  • How what you learn working for someone else can prepare you for starting your own business.
  • How to see pursuing your “calling” not as a selfish act, but as a responsibility to yourself and to those whose lives you will impact.
