Mastering Productivity with Mike Vardy

ABOUT MIKE VARDY

Do you wish you were a little more productive?  Are there things you’re not getting accomplished right now because you’ve got way too much on your plate?

Well, Mike Vardy is a thought leader in productivity.  He’s an author, speaker, and founder and President of Productivityist.com, a company that helps people stop “doing productivity” and start “being productive” through online and offline channels.  Before founding Productivityist, he was the managing editor of Lifehack’s productivity blog.

TIME IS THE ONLY RESOURCE YOU DON’T GET BACK.

Mike started honing his productivity skills when he was a manager of TWO departments at Costco.  He needed to create a system to help him run both departments efficiently, and so what has since become Mike’s signature productivity system was actually born on the job at Costco!

He walks us through several of his own productivity tips in the interview.  You’ll definitely want to take notes!

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
  • Why staying in a job you hate may actually hurt OTHER people too.
  • How journaling can be a super-effective way to clear your mind so you can focus on what you need to accomplish.
  • What a “Now” page is and how it can help you get more done!
  • Oh! And you’ll find out how to get access to Mike’s productivity system

The 100th Episode!

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

I discovered Scott and Happen to Your Career almost 2 years ago through the YoPro Wealth podcast.  I was hellbent on learning how to take control of my finances and trying to get out of debt.  I was just starting to see the connection between being debt-free and having true freedom.  I’d begun to question my old assumptions that I’d always be in debt and always be limited in my career options because of it.  Hope entered the picture and possibilities for my future that were never there before emerged.  Scott and Happen to Your Career played a HUGE part in that.

It really is an honor to be here now, celebrating 100 episodes with the HTYC team and with YOU, our listeners!

Tracey
WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, HERE’S SCOTT ON THE BEGINNINGS OF HTYC…
THIS IS WHAT I SHOULD BE DOING.

I was so nervous… I felt like a fraud! This was the first time that I had ever told anyone besides Alyssa and a few friends and family that I was starting this crazy business where we sell happiness in the form of career sized packages.

Those same family and friends were used to me doing weird things, so it just wasn’t a big deal if they knew.

But I wasn’t really ready for everyone else to know!

WHO WAS I TO TELL PEOPLE HOW TO MAKE CAREER CHANGES?

Why would anyone listen to me about how to figure out what they should be doing?

These were the questions that were rolling around my mind as I was getting ready to speak at a convention in Seattle.

It wasn’t the public speaking that was making my hands sweat!  It was the thought that people might find out!

Any minute before they called my name to go into the room to talk to the folks in the 60 chairs, I thought they were going to come out and tell me that although they were sorry, they had the wrong person!

They were actually looking for someone qualified to talk to these people (and I clearly was not it).

Finally the time came, I went up to the front of the room.

I began my talk…

I couldn’t tell you to this day exactly what I said.  I honestly don’t remember what it was about and I probably didn’t prep very well.

But I remember finishing and being ecstatic. I got lots of questions from the attendees. I even talked to one guy who said that he wanted to discuss coaching (he never returned my calls when I tried to reach him later… didn’t matter though!)

I got out to the parking lot and as quickly as I could, I dialed Alyssa and told her, “This is what I should be doing.”

It wasn’t a paid gig at all. I was a volunteer. That didn’t matter.

Much much later when we would go on to create the Happen to Your Career Podcast, Mark (my original Co-founder) and I would talk to Richie Norton, the author of The Power of Starting Something Stupid:

Richie said, “There’s magic when you’re in motion.”

…and he was right!

I started a blog that I called “Happen to Your Career”, where I wrote things like “Success will come to those who are morning people.”

The writing is really bad.  Check it out for yourself.

(I cringed badly re-reading it a few minutes ago.)

That’s besides the point though.

I wrote that just 2 years ago. Yes, it’s terrible writing and at that time I didn’t have a company because HTYC was just getting started.

But it was only two years ago.  I learn things much slower than the average person.

I tell people all the time, “I was that kid that had to touch the burner multiple times to realize that it’s hot.”

…which is good news for you, because you can probably completely change your life in even less time!

I started HTYC with a dream to be able to help people in their careers while at the same time getting to do the combination of things that I love to do!

It was completely on the side of my day job in HR, with a wife and kids and all the normal busy-ness that everyone else has.

I’m just a normal guy who’s trying to use the strengths and experiences I already have.

Guess what?

You have strengths and experiences too that are just as valuable (if not more)!

AND, IF YOU WANT TO COMPLETELY CHANGE YOUR LIFE AND WORK, YOU CAN.

So we put together this fairly raw story of our journey from “zero” to where I completely hang up my HR hat in the next 10 days and dive into HTYC 100% with both feet (which I’m more than a little excited about!)

It’s not been a perfect journey.

When you’re pursuing something you love, there are ALWAYS highs and lows along the way!

I want you to hear about some of ours so that you can both be entertained AND understand what it really takes to follow your dreams!

It won’t be perfect.  Things won’t always go well.  But, it makes those wins that you have along the way, that much sweeter!

Celebrate our first 100 episodes (and me hanging up my “HR hat” completely)!  It’s because of YOU that we’re here, doing what we do and we want to celebrate with YOU!

Here’s to the next 100!

Is this all there is?

THERE USED TO BE A SECURITY GUARD WHERE I WOULD WORK.

Every day I would come into work and he would say things like, “Guess what? It’s Hump day” or “Only 4 more days until Friday!”

He was an extremely jovial guy.

I mean occasionally he would drop some F bombs at the delivery trucks when they would pull in the wrong direction but for the most part my co-workers all would have described him as a happy guy.

HE HATED HIS JOB.

This was very clear to me but I don’t think it was to anybody else. I mean, why couldn’t anybody else see this?

Ok seriously it had to be hard to miss, the guy measured time in how many hours there was until he could go home!

FOR THE LONGEST TIME, I DIDN’T REALLY UNDERSTAND WHY NOBODY REALIZED IT.

I mean, how could you miss it, when he asked how I was doing and I would say “11 out of 10 today”, his reply was, “Well I’ll be better at 2pm.”

I asked him, “What’s at 2pm Randall?”

He would quickly reply “That’s go home time!”

I really didn’t get how people could miss that he hated his job, At first I thought it was because he did everything with a smile on his face… or maybe it was because he talked to everyone and everybody liked him.

I am so naive sometimes! I don’t know how I missed it.

WHAT’S GOING ON HERE?

If you don’t already know, don’t worry I tell you in just a minute… but first!

I have to tell you why I’m being forced to leave HR work…

My HR jobs were the first time that work didn’t feel like work! there were plenty of times where I would put in long hours and everything but mostly it just was easy and natural to me… two of them I definitely considered to be my dream jobs at the time.

Oh… they also paid really well and I had lots of opportunities for advancement if I wanted it.

So now you’re like, “OK then… why would you leave?”

THEY WON’T LET ME RUN UP THE STAIRS.

Yes I’m serious.

(At this point you are probably like, “OK who is this weird guy?  Who really even wants to run up the stairs anyways?”)

I DO!

When I was about 7 years old, I was just like any other 7 year-old kid!

I ran just about every where I went.

I would slide around corners, trip on all sorts of things, get up and continue running into the next room.

I noticed something funny though – adults didn’t do this.

Especially going up stairs, I mean sometimes I would see adults run on the street sometimes even other places…

…but never up the stairs

I didn’t understand it, In my 7 year-old mind, I was like, “Why WOULDN’T people run up the stairs?  It’s fun, it’s exercise!”

I decided that I would run up stairs every opportunity I got!

To this day I still do that.

Well, I do most times (Have you tried running up stairs carrying luggage?) and I get a lot of funny looks when it’s in public. But it just reminds me to not care about what other people think.

I’M HAVING FUN AND THEY’RE ALL WORRIED ABOUT WHAT EVERYBODY ELSE SHOULD DO OR WHAT PEOPLE MIGHT THINK.

Only recently have I realized that there are two separate worlds.

One world of people who are very worried about what you “should do” and another completely different world of those who refuse to give the joy in their lives away in exchange for what others might think.

I recently heard some of the most useful advice I have ever heard from Mike Rowe (that’s right, the
“Dirty Jobs” guy!)

He said,

Happiness doesn’t come from a job. Happiness comes from knowing what you value and then behaving in a way that’s consistent with those beliefs.

That’s what most people miss.

You have to figure out what you want and what is important to you to be happy then you need to do work that aligns with that.

I can’t do HR work forever because companies don’t like it when HR guys sprint full speed up the stairs. (Something about it setting a terrible example for safety or whatever…)

I value being able to keep that promise to myself to never fully lose that spirit, hope, and (most of all) the fun that children can have in everything they do.

Which means I have to do work that allows me to have that. So… that’s one of the many reasons why I here writing to you right now!

Wait though…

Did you figure out what was going on with my coworkers? How come they didn’t realize that Randall hated his job. How come it wasn’t obvious to them like it wasn’t to me?

IT WAS NORMAL BEHAVIOR TO THEM.

They aren’t all that happy either.

It’s not that they’re bad people or even necessarily that they’re in the wrong jobs for them, they just don’t know what they want.

More importantly they all think that that’s just the way it is, that life doesn’t get any better than this.

You just go through until “Hump Day” and then there’s only two more days left in the week!

It’s not their fault.  It really isn’t.  They just don’t know a better way. They don’t know that there is a world where “Hump Day” doesn’t exist. It’s not necessarily easier in this world, but it’s definitely worth it.

It’s a little like in the Matrix where Keanu Reeves is given a choice to take the red pill or the blue pill by Morpheus.

The best and worst part is that once you take the red pill, you can never go back and you won’t ever be able to look at work the same way again.

What Makes You Weird Can Make You Great with Danielle Watson

ABOUT DANIELLE WATSON

So, what happens when you finish up your education and step out into the world ready to start a career as an anthropologist, only to have the realization hit…that you don’t actually like digging in the dirt?

Well, if you’re entrepreneur Danielle Watson, you take your background in cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and archaeology, and turn it into a one-of-a-kind coaching business! The Purse Process is Danielle’s unique approach to getting to the core of what her clients truly value and helping them to “turn their personal quirks into high-value professional assets.”

Danielle takes us through her own journey from standing out to success.  She shows us that those things about ourselves that make us different from everyone else, the experiences, and interests, and backgrounds that don’t really appear to fit together, and almost at times seem to be at odds with one another, could actually be our recipe for success!

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
  • What on earth archaeology has to do with…coaching?
  • How what makes you weird can actually be what makes you great – taking those pieces of you that don’t quite seem to fit together and combining them into a superpower!
  • Why when you are living in a way that’s uniquely you, doing things that “fill” you up, other people’s opinions matter much, much less.
  • And…you’ll learn exactly what Facebook “joy stalking” is…

I think anyone who is conscious or awakened to the fact that there’s more going on here than just being born, working hard, and dying – anyone who’s in that category is seeking to understand and find a part of themselves.

Expect Success with Jesse Tevelow

ABOUT JESSE TEVELOW

Failure happens.

The common wisdom these days seems to be just to build it into the plan from the start. Make 50 sales calls, expecting 49 No’s to get to that 1 Yes.

Right?

Well, how different might things be if we just expected success instead?

Jesse Tevelow is the author of The Connection Algorithm: Take Risks, Defy the Status Quo, and Live Your Passions. He makes the case that expecting success from the get go, being prepared for failure (but not planning FOR it), can actually push us further, make us work harder, and attain way more than we’d ever imagined!

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
  • How paying attention to trends and “getting in early” can make all the difference in your career or entrepreneurial journey.
  • Why expecting failure and planning for it actually ISN’T the best approach when starting something new.
  • The importance of surrounding yourself with others who are passionate “doers”
  • How the odds can end up tipping in your favor with the more risks you take – why it’s crucial to “keep making moves”
  • Why in the long run, “failures” aren’t really “failures” at all!

Ready for a new career, but not sure what you want to do next?  Enroll in our free 8-day ‘Figure it Out’ course!

Practicing Incremental Bravery with Grant Baldwin

ABOUT GRANT BALDWIN

Grant Baldwin is the host of the How Did You Get into That? Podcast, featuring interviews with people from all walks of life doing the work they love!

Getting to work you love doesn’t usually come without some measure of bravery – in the decisions we make, the actions we take, and the willingness to accept the risks involved.

Grant shares with us a concept called “incremental bravery”.  (He attributes the term to Paul Jarvis) This is the idea that we can take small, calculated risks to reach much a bigger goal or vision.

He quit a stable job while his wife was 5 months pregnant with their first child – with no plan!  After months of self discovery he decided to pursue a career as a speaker and step-by-step built his business.

So, wherever you want to go, you CAN get there from here!

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
  • Why most people NEVER change, even if they aren’t satisfied in their lives.
  • The importance of surrounding yourself with the people who “get” you.
  • How, even though the entire journey may not be lit for you, the illumination of your “headlights”may just be enough to get you down the road to your destination!
